Norse Mythology | Loke’s ladies: Sigyn & Angerboda - Sigyn & Angrboða

Sigyn is Loke’s wife, and is deeply devoted to him. She is the mother of his sons Vale and Narve. When one of Loke’s tricks goes too far, he receives the punishment of having poison dripped on him for all eternity. Sigyn sits by him, collecting the poison in a bowl to spare him the pain. The vikings believed earthquakes were caused by Loke writhing in pain whenever she moved the bowl to empty it. Sigyn is a goddess, but has no known attributes.

Angerboda is a jotun who was Loke’s mistress. She gave birth to Hel, the goddess of death, the Fenris Wolf and the Midgard Serpent. Her name, “bringer of sorrow”, comes from the fact that her offspring killed Tor and Odin during Ragnarok.

Loke is the god of mischief and a shape-shifter. His parents were the jotun Fårbaute and the goddess Lauvøy (or Laufey). He was distantly related to Odin. He is described as beautiful, and often helped the gods out of tricky situations. While he played several malicious tricks for his own amusement, he is never characterised as evil. Loke is married to Sigyn, by whom he has two sons, Vale and Narve. His mistress was Angerboda, a jotun by whom he had Hel, the Fenris wolf and the Midgard serpent.
